How Is Asthma Treated?

Drugs against asthma play a central role in a treatment plan. Some drugs prevent or reduce inflammation of the airways; others interrupt the allergic reaction that triggers the symptoms.

Your doctor will work with you to find the right combination of drugs to manage your asthma and adjust the type and amount depending on your symptoms and the type of asthma you have. The goal of asthma medicine in treatment is to feel as well as possible with the least medicine.

What are the main types of drugs against asthma?

There are four types of drugs against asthma that each handles a different part of your asthma:

1. Bronchodilators relax and open the airways to relieve asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

2. Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce and prevent lung inflammation.

3. Drug combination combines a bronchodilator and an anti-inflammatory device.

4. Leukotriene modifiers block the action of leukotrienes, chemicals involved in the immune system.
