Preparing For Menstruation: Menstrual Pads

Menstruation is the monthly discharge of blood from the genital area for 4-5 days during a woman's reproductive period from menarche to menopause. This is known as your period and is an important sign of physical maturity and becoming a woman.

It is important to wear menstrual pads, also called sanitary napkins, during menstruation. Menstrual pads absorb blood flow and protect your clothes from stains. Menstrual pads are made of absorbent fiber, usually cellulose. You can easily buy menstrual pads online also.

In addition, there may be a plastic pad on the bottom to reduce leakage. Choosing the right pad for your flow is important when you get your period to prevent leakage and avoid public nuisance.

It is best to check your pads every 2-3 hours to see if they need to be changed. For hygiene reasons and to avoid rashes, it is best to change pads as often as possible.

When changing menstrual pads, be sure to dispose of them properly. Wrap it in a plastic lid on the pad popped in or in the newspaper and throw it in the trash.

When you first start your period, you may experience irregular menstrual patterns. So be sure to keep a pad or two in your school locker or in your backpack for emergencies if you suddenly get your period.

If you don't have pads with you, you can buy them at your nearest pharmacy and most grocery stores. Menstrual tampons (of any form) should not be flushed down the toilet as they can cause blockages.
